PETER A. KARL III, CPA and Attorney, is the tax partner of the law firm PARAVATI, KARL, GREEN & DeBELLA, LLP in Utica, New York.  Since 1986 one of his areas of specialization has been in Section 1031 Exchanges, providing services to clients, realtors, accountants and attorneys throughout the country in any of the following capacities (noting he is the author of an informational web site on IRC Section 1031 Exchanges, www.1031exchangetax.com).



  • Preliminary Exchange Consultations/Feasibility Determinations to individuals nationally contemplating Section 1031.
  • Outside exchange tax counsel to a client’s own attorney/accountant/realtor.

Karl has conducted over two hundred and fifty seminars nationally along with authoring several manuals on the subject of taxation.  Sponsoring organizations for his seminars include professional associations from Atlanta to Alaska such as a solo sixteen hour presentations before the North Dakota Society of CPAs over two days in October 2012 and the Iowa Society of CPAs in October 2013.  The CPA Journal has published thirteen of his works (the “20 Question” series) as featured articles including a cover story on the topic of Elder/Estate Planning and one on the use of Delaware Trusts for asset protection (September 2013). Since 1989 he has been on the faculty of New York University (NYU) presenting eight hour seminars for their National Real Estate Institute.  He is also tenured as a Professor of Taxation and Law for the State University of New York (SUNY) where he has taught for over thirty years.  For the past six years Karl has been a member of the Editorial Board of the CPA Journal.  He is also certified as a Hearing Neutral by the American Arbitration Association, conducting arbitration hearings on commercial matters throughout the Northeast.


Karl is licensed to practice before the U.S. Tax Court and is a member of various professional associations including the American Association of Attorney-Certified Public Accountants for whom he has served as an at large Board Member. 


Besides specializing in transactional law, his practice includes tax/legal consultations to realtors, accountants and attorneys throughout the country in such areas as Section 1031 deferred real estate exchanges, estate/trust planning and asset protection.
